Each piece of chewing gum contains nicotine in a resin complex. It also contains the following inactive ingredients: Gum base, calcium carbonate, sorbitol, mannitol, sodium carbonate, sodium hydrogen carbonate, glycerol, butylated hydroxytoluene, xylitol, gelatin, etc.
Sodium content: 11.5 mg per piece.
Nicotinell belongs to a group of drugs used to help stop smoking.
When Nicotinell Chewing Gum is chewed or sucked, nicotine is released from the chewing gum slowly and absorbed through the lining of the mouth. This nicotine replacement alleviates some of the unpleasant withdrawal effects that frequently occur when giving up smoking eg, cravings, feeling ill or irritable.
Nicotinell Chewing Gum also reduces the desire to smoke by providing some of the nicotine previously inhaled from cigarettes and therefore, helps the patient have the willpower to resist cigarettes.
Nicotinell Chewing Gum is used when tobacco consumption corresponds to <20 cigarettes/day for Nicotinell 2 mg.
Treatment of nicotine dependence as an aid to smoking cessation.
Nicotinell Chewing Gum is not like ordinary gum, the patient should stop smoking completely when Nicotinell is started. One piece of chewing gum should be chewed when the patient feels the urge to smoke.
It is important to chew correctly.
Nicotinell Chewing Technique: Chew 1 piece of gum slowly until taste becomes strong.
Rest the piece of gum between the gum and cheek.
Chew again when taste has faded.
Repeat chewing routine for about 30 min.
Most people chew 8-12 pieces of gum a day. Do not use >1 piece of chewing gum at a time and do not use >25 pieces of chewing gum a day. After about 3 months, the patient must gradually cut down the number of pieces chewed each day, until use of Nicotinell is completely stopped.
Use of Nicotinell Chewing Gum for >1 year is not recommended.
In the event of an accidental overdose or if a child has eaten any, contact a doctor or the nearest hospital emergency department and show them the packet or leaflet, if possible. Nicotinell Chewing Gum is not suitable for children who may develop signs of nicotine overdose eg, headache, sickness, stomach pains and diarrhoea.
Nonsmokers.
Use in children: Nicotinell Chewing Gum should not be used by people <18 years.
In case of the following conditions, the patient should not use Nicotinell Chewing Gum without consulting the doctor or pharmacist: Serious heart disease; stroke; diabetes; overactive thyroid gland; persistent indigestion or severe sore throat, stomach ulcer; high blood pressure, angina or circulatory problems; serious liver or kidney disease.
Coffee, juices and fizzy drinks may reduce the absorption of nicotine and should not be taken for 15 min before chewing the gum.
The effects of some drugs can be altered when the patient stops smoking, therefore, if the patient is taking other drugs, the doctor must be informed to adjust the dosage.
Fructose intolerance or if the patient is taking any other medicines regularly.
Use in pregnancy & lactation: If the patient is pregnant or breastfeeding, the doctor or pharmacist should be consulted before using Nicotinell Chewing Gum.

Sometimes some minor side effects will be experienced for the first few days. These include: Bitter taste, hiccups, sore throat; headache, feeling sick or dizzy; indigestion eg, mild indigestion or heartburn.
None of the previously mentioned side effects are serious and if any are experienced, try reading the chewing instructions again to check that the gum is not chewed too fast or too often.
